Lupa Lupa Ingat Imperial Zombies, Modern Vampires and Contemporary Ghosts

Symposium 19 October 2017, Tervuren

Symposium in English

The symposium will seek to enrich and deepen an understanding of Indonesian modern and contemporary art and its internationalism. The terms of engagement, exchange of ideas and practices of art are all overlaid and confronted with colonialism, modernity and nationalism. Critical dialogues are still needed to reexamine these histories and connect them together, and artistic works are often useful keys to uncovering links across time and space that are not immediately apparent.

The subsequent history of post-colonial and contemporary conditions in four countries (ID, DRC, BE, NL) will be touched on through a limited number of artists projects. The symposium will suggest that mainstream narratives still leave many issues neglected or unread—for various reasons and interests—and will try to outline ideas for future research.

This symposium is an initiative of Europalia, in collaboration with the Royal Museum for Central Africa. It is organised in the framework of Europalia Arts Festival Indonesia.
